EDISON, NJ (April 30) The 2001 MAAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship will be hosted by Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ on Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6. Canisius College, Iona College, Manhattan College, Marist College, Rider University, and St. Peter's College will be competing in this year's championship. Manhattan College has won the last four men's and women's team titles and will be looking for their fifth consecutive championship.
Manhattan College won the men's team title at the 2000 MAAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship with 217 points and the women's team title with 253 points. The Rider men finished second with 163 and the women also finished second with 124 points. The Iona men finished third with 86 points and the Marist women finished third with 89 points. Seven MAAC men's records, three by members of Manhattan, and five MAAC women's records, four by members of Manhattan, were set at the 2000 MAAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
Justin Lindsay (Trenton, NJ), a senior from Rider University, will try to repeat his tremendous performance from the 2000 MAAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship where he was named the most outstanding male athlete. He will try and repeat as champion in the 100 meter sprint and 110 meter hurdles. He set a MAAC record in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.65 at last year's championship.
Marist sophomore Susan Golden (Vernon, CT), the most outstanding athlete at the 2000 Outdoor Track and Field Championship, will try to capture her second consecutive championship in the 800 meter run and 1500 meter run. She finished almost five seconds ahead of her nearest competitor in each race.
Ed Potter (Monroe, NJ), a junior at Manhattan College, won three events at the 2000 MAAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship and set a MAAC record in two of them. He won the long jump in a MAAC record distance of 6.86 meters, the 400 meter run in a MAAC record time of 48.50 seconds, and the 200 meter run in 22.26 seconds, just 0.18 seconds off the record that he set in 1999.
St. Peter's junior Katie Kopacz (Bayonne, NJ) won the 5000 meter run in a MAAC record time of 17:34.9 at the 2000 MAAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship. She finished over one minute ahead of the second place finisher.
The field events will begin at 4:00 pm and the running events start at 5:00 pm on Saturday, May 5. The field events begin at 10:00 am and the running events begin at 11:00 am on Sunday, May 6.
Admission will be $3 for adults and $1 for children ages 10 and under. Students will be admitted free of charge with their student ID card. There will be no complementary tickets.
