Fairfield's Santos & Sarosy Each Earn Berth To NFCA All-Northeast Region Team

Fairfield, CT - Fairfield University seniors Mellissa Santos and Ellen Sarosy both earned a spot on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Northeast Region team. Both players received the honor for the second straight season.

Sarosy capped her season with the 2003 MAAC Player of the Year for the second straight season, after registering a .377 batting average. She stroked 66 hits, which pushed her over the 200 career-hit mark and made her the first to reach that plateau at Fairfield. Sarosy, who also holds the school record for career steals, ranked among the nation's leaders for stolen bases per game with 26 in 53 games (0.48 per game). The center fielder also picked up All-MAAC first team honors, as well as MAAC All-Academic accolades.

Santos finished the 2003 campaign with a 17-10 overall record with 23 complete games in 26 starts. She fanned 263 batters in 199.2 innings, which placed among the nation's leaders for strikeouts per seven innings. Santos became the 16th player in Division I history to reach 1,000 career strikeouts, reaching the mark on April 1. Santos tossed eight shutouts, and combined for one more shutout this year. The righthander also picked up the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Pitcher of the Year for the third time, was first team All-MAAC and MAAC All-Academic in 2003.

Fairfield University finished the 2003 season with a 28-25 overall record under sixth-year head coach Julie Brzezinski. The Stags won the MAAC regular-season title with a 12-4 mark, and advanced to the MAAC tournament for the seventh straight time.
