Jana Burton to Head Saint Peter's Women's Track and Field/Cross Country

Jersey City, NJ - Jana Burton is the new head coach of women's track and field and cross country at Saint Peter's College, Director of Athletics William A. Stein announced.

In addition to her duties as the head coach of the women's teams, Burton will also assist the men's teams in the sprints and the field events.

Burton is a graduate of Seton Hall University, where she holds six records in the shot put, weight throw and hammer throw. A team captain, she was All-Big East at the conference indoor and outdoor championships in each of her last three years of college competition and she was All-Big East outdoors as a freshman. She twice won the Big East championship in the shot put and she was an ECAC Athlete of the Week as a senior and had an NCAA provisional-qualifying throw in the shot put as a junior.

Competing at top level meets nationwide throughout her career, she won or placed in numerous prestigious events. She was also a Big East Academic All-Star, graduating from Seton Hall with a degree in business administration.

She is an elementary school teacher, employed by the Newark, NJ, Public Schools. Burton is pursuing a master's degree in secondary education from New Jersey City University. She also worked for the NJCU athletic department in 2002-03.

"Her coach at Seton Hall, John Moon (who has coached United States teams in international competition, including the Olympics, and developed 71 collegiate All-Americans) had the utmost respect for her as a student-athlete and he recommended her highly."
