Canisius Falls to DePaul, 8-0, in Five Innings

Ann Arbor, MI - DePaul first baseman Saskia Roberson went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a three-run double to lead the Blue Demons to an 8-0 win over the Canisius College softball team Friday morning in a loser's bracket game at the 2004 NCAA Division I Softball Regional in Ann Arbor, Mich. DePaul (30-30-1) advances to play the loser of the Tennessee-Oregon State game Friday at 8:00 p.m., while the Golden Griffins saw their season end at 23-30.

Roberson put DePaul on the board with a two-run shot in the bottom of the first off losing pitcher Andrea Bunten. The Blue Demons added one run in the home half of the fourth after winning pitcher Sarah Martz helped her own cause with an RBI double to score Linda Secka, who reached base with a one-out double down the left field line one batter earlier.

DePaul was able to score five runs in the bottom of the fifth to inflict the NCAA's eight-run mercy rule. Roberson drilled a two-out double to left center to clear the bases and end the contest. Martz went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI at the plate in the win, while teammate Sarah Douglas also went 3-for-3 at the dish. Martz went the distance in the cirlce for DePaul, allowing four hits and striking out four as she improves her record to 24-15 on the year.

Canisius senior Tempie Coelho-Freeman went 2-for-2 with a double in the loss for the Griffs, while junior Beth Enk went 2-for-2 as well. Bunten went 4.2 innings, allowing eight runs on 12 hits while striking out three. Bunten finished the year with a 16-10 record.

Canisius closed out the weekend trip to Ann Arbor, Mich., with two losses. The Griffs reached their seventh NCAA Tournament in school history after winning the 2004 MAAC Softball Championship May 14-15, at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Canisius is now 4-15 all-time in NCAA action. The school is the only memeber of the MAAC to ever win an a game in the NCAA Tournament.
