Manhattan Men And Women Win Ninth Consecutive MAAC Indoor Track And Field Championship

New York, NY ?“ The Manhattan College Men?™s & Women?™s track & field teams won their ninth consecutive MAAC Indoor Track & Field Championships today at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York.

The Manhattan men finished with 186 points followed by Rider with 145 points and Iona with 93 points. The Manhattan Lady Jaspers finished with 196 points, just a few points ahead of second place Rider, who finished with 192.5 points followed by Marist with 98.5 points.

Several records fell at today?™s championship, for the men Iona?™s Richard Kiplagat?™s 4:02.58 time in the one mile run was good enough to top the previous record of 4:03.85 set in 2004 by fellow Gael Sean Connolly. Michael Bamberger of Marist College set a new record in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:52.96. Army?™s Kevin Williams held the previous record of 1:53.16 set in 1989. David Payne of Rider University had a time of 21.76 in the 200 meter dash, beating the old mark of 21.87 set by Fordham?™s Wayne Seaton in 1989. Manhattan?™s Christiano Johnson set a new record in the high jump by jumping 2.16 meters. The previous mark of 2.11 was set by fellow Jasper Joe Sciuto in 1998. Iona?™s distance medley team finished with a time of 10:05.74, beating the mark of 10:11.14 set by Iona?™s distance medley team of 2004.

For the women, Manhattan?™s Marina Liander set a new record in the Weight Throw with a distance of 17.35 meters. Liander beat the previous mark of 17.14 meters set by fellow Jasper LaCole Fields in 2000. Iona?™s Michelle Gallagher set a new mark in the one mile run with a time of 4:55.18, eclipsing the old mark of 5:00.42 set in 1990 by Holy Cross?™ Nancy Sullivan. Iona?™s distance medley team finished with a time of 12:15.37 to be the old mark of 12:29.32 set by Manhattan in 2003.

Manhattan?™s Milan Jotanovic was named the Men?™s Most Outstanding Performer for field events, while Iona?™s Stephen Chemlany was named Men?™s Most Outstanding Performer for track events. For the women, Manhattan?™s Tina Magi was named Women?™s Most Outstanding Performer for field events and Iona?™s Emmily Chalenga was named Most Outstanding Performer for track events. Iona?™s Mick Byrnes and Manhattan?™s Dan Mecca were named Men?™s Indoor Track & Field Co-Coaches of the year, while Rider?™s Bill Hodge and Manhattan?™s Mecca were named Women?™s Indoor Track & Field Co-Coaches of the year.
