Manhattan Advances With 88-67 Win Over Loyola

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jeff Xavier scored 20 points to lead Manhattan to an 88-67 win over Loyola in the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament Friday night.

Jason Wingate added 19 points for the sixth-seeded Jaspers, who won their fifth straight tournament game. Peter Mulligan had 16 points and Arturo Dubois 13.

Manhattan (15-13, 10-9 MAAC) led from start to finish, scoring the game's first 13 points. The Jaspers held No. 9 seed Loyola (6-22, 5-14) scoreless until 13:27 of the first half.

Manhattan extended its lead to 35-10 with 5:21 left in the first half after Mulligan scored seven straight points. The Jaspers carried a 45-17 lead into halftime.

The Greyhounds, who were 5-for-28 in the first half, connected on 60 percent of their field goals in the second half but came no closer than a 19-point deficit with 2:32 remaining.

Linton Hinds scored 16 points for the Greyhounds, who have not won a tournament game since 2001. Sean Corrigan added 15.

Manhattan will face No. 3 seed Fairfield on Saturday. Also Friday, Iona beat Siena 68-51 and Canisius beat Marist 62-60.
