Flushing, NY ?“ The women of Niagara University & the men of Manhattan College won the 2005 MAAC Men?™s & Women?™s Tennis Championships held at the USTA National Tennis Center.

The Niagara Purple Eagles won the championship by upsetting top seed Marist 4-2. In doubles play, the Purple Eagle tandem of Miriam Al-Shikarchy & Danielle Grenier took the #1 match (8-4), while Kendra Daigler & Shella Dargout took the #3 match (8-3) to give the Purple Eagles the doubles point.

In singles play, Al-Shikarchy took the #1 singles in three sets (6-1, 6-7, 7-5) by defeating Marist?™s Yana Tikhouko. In the #2 singles match Grenier defeated the Red Foxes Diana Perachio in straight sets (6-4, 6-2). Niagara?™s Julianne Prokopich took the #5 singles match, defeating Megan Gureck in straight sets (6-2, 6-4).

Niagara?™s Al-Shikarchy was named the tournament?™s most outstanding performer.

In men?™s play, top seed Manhattan defeated Marist 4-0 to claim their second title in as many years. Erez Cohen & Zolton Bus claimed the first doubles match 8-2, while Diego Alvarado & David Alvarado won the third doubles match to give the Jaspers the doubles win.

In singles play, Bus took the first match over Pedro Genovese 6-1, 7-6, 8-6 (6). In the third singles match Peter Czink defeated Brendon Van Wesbeek in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) and Erez Cohen claimed the fourth singles match, defeating Mark Santucci in straight sets (6-3, 7-5).

For the second consecutive year Manhattan?™s Zoltan Bus was named the tournament?™s Most Outstanding Player.

All consolation matches were canceled to due inclement weather in yesterday?™s semifinal rounds.
