Kissimee, FL - In first round action of the 2005 JetBlue Airways MAAC Women's Soccer Championship the Canisius College Griffs defeated Saint Peter's College Peahens 4-1 in the opening game of the championship while the Rider University Broncs shutout the Manhattan College Jaspers 4-0 in the final game today at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.
In game one Krissy Kilbride of Saint Peter?™s scored the first goal of the game at 12:42, the goal was assisted by Kyle Marsh. Canisius answered right back and tied the game up with a goal scored at the 14:14 mark by Stephanie Karst off an assist from Amanda Janosky. At the half way mark the game was still tied at one goal each. In the second half at the 48:10 mark Carly McGunnigle scored a Canisius goal off a pass from Stephanie Karst. Shortly after that at the 49:23 mark, Canisius?™ Amanda Janosky scored an unassisted goal giving the Griffs a 3-1 lead. Then at the 50:00 mark Danielle Brenier scored the games final goal, giving the Griffs a 4-1 lead over the Peahens.
Jenna Cage finished the game with five saves for the Griffs. Angela Albruzzese started the game in goal for the Peahens and Andrea Kovalcik finished the game in goal registering one save on the day. The Griffs advance to face the #2 seeded Niagara University Purple Eagles at 11:15 am in tomorrow?™s quarterfinals. The Peahens finish their season with a record of 2-16 overall, 1-8 in the MAAC.
In game two the first half between the Broncs and Jaspers was pretty quite, the teams finished the first half tied at 0-0. In the second half, Rider?™s Kelli Burke scored the first goal of the game at the 50:33 mark, giving the Broncs a 1-0 edge. Later Rider?™s Kayla Devlin scored an unassisted goal at 65:08. In the later part of the half the Broncs continued to scored goals with Amanda Scully scoring an unassisted goal at 84:30 and Lauren Mahar scoring a goal at the 89:46 mark, as the Broncs went on to win the game 4-0.
Rider?™s Kim Carter registered three saves on the day, playing 90 minutes in goal and had her third shutout of the season. Alicia DeFino also played 90 minutes in goal and had two saves on the day for the Jaspers. The Broncs advance to tomorrows quarterfinals where they will meet #1 seed Loyola College at 1:45 pm. Manhattan wraps their season with an overall record of 6-12-2, 1-7-1 in the MAAC.
