Manhattan Picks Up 2006 MAAC Menb(TM)s & Womenb(TM)s Indoor Track Titles

Results

New York, NY ?“ The men?™s and women?™s track teams at Manhattan College claimed the 2006 MAAC Indoor Track & Field Championships today at the Armory in New York. The victory gives the Jasper men and women their tenth consecutive victory at the MAAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.

The Jasper men totaled 204.5 points in the meet followed by second place Rider University (163.5) and third place Iona College (70). On the women?™s side, Manhattan finished the meet with 215.5 points; just ahead of second place Rider?™s 2002 points. Iona placed third with 71 points.

There were six new meet records established at the championship. In the very first event of the day, Manhattan?™s Mariana Liander scored a mark of 17.80 meters in the weight throw, breaking her own record of 17.35 set in 2005. Iona?™s Stephen Chemlany finished the 5000 meter run with a time of 14:33.42 to break the previous meet record of 14:42.37 set by Vinny Mulvey of Iona in 1998. In the 800 meter run, Iona?™s Tim Bayley set a new mark of 1:50.21 to surpass the previous mark of 1:52.96 set at the 2005 meet by Marist?™s Michael Bamberger.

The day seemed to be filled with student-athletes breaking their own meet records from the 2005 championship as Rider?™s David Payne sprinted to a 21.46 time in the 200 meter dash, breaking his own record of 21.76 set at last year?™s meet. In the men?™s shot put, Milan Jotanovic of Manhattan scored a mark of 19.28 meters to eclipse the previous meet record of 18.10 set by him at the 2005 meet. And the women's distance medley team from Iona also set a new meet mark of 12:15.04, surpassing the previous time of 12:15.37, a mark they set in 2005.

Manhattan?™s Tiina Magi was named Most Outstanding Performer for field events after winning the triple jump with a distance of 11.58 meters. Iona?™s Michelle Gallagher claimed Most Outstanding Performer for track event honors after claiming the top spot in the 5000 and 3000 meter runs. Dan Mecca won Coach of the Year honors after leading Manhattan?™s women?™s team to another indoor title.

For the men, Manhattan?™s Dexter Jules was selected Most Outstanding Performer for field events after winning the triple jump and high jump. The award for Most Outstanding Performer for track events went to Iona?™s Stephen Chemlany for his record breaking performance in the 5000 meter run and he also claimed the top spot in the 3000 meter run. Mecca was also named Coach of the Year on the men?™s side after his team claimed its tenth MAAC Indoor Track & Field title.
