Edison, NJ -- Founded in 1980 and beginning competition during the Fall of 1981, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference celebrates 25 years of commitment to excellence in both competition and scholastics by the MAAC??s institutions, administrators, coaches, student-athletes and fans during the 2005-06 academic year.

Kicking off the celebration festivities is the unveiling of the MAAC??s 25th anniversary commemorative logo. The logo will be used throughout the 2005-06 season in various forms. It will play a prominent role in all MAAC printed materials, the MAAC television package, which calls for over 20 broadcasts this year, and the MAAC web site, www.maacsports.com. Additionally, merchandise featuring the new logo will be available for purchase on the league??s web site and at all conference championships. The new logo was designed by Phoenix Design Works of New York, NY.

The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter??s College. Competition followed one year later in the Fall of 1981, with the charter members competing in the sports of men??s cross country and men??s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men??s basketball game and the MAAC story had begun.

Today, through several membership changes as well as expansion, the MAAC now boasts 10 institutions, consisting of Canisius College, Fairfield, Iona, Loyola (Md.) College, Manhattan, Marist College, Niagara University, Rider University, Saint Peter??s and Siena College. The MAAC currently sponsors 25 sports, crowning champions in 24 of those. In 1993 the MAAC branched out to form the MAAC Football League. In 1996 the MAAC Lacrosse Leagues began play, and most recently, in 2003 the MAAC Women??s Water Polo League started competition.
