Rider's Thompson Chosen Preseason Player of the Year

Rider University senior forward Jason Thompson has been chosen as the 2007-08 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year, as chosen by the MAAC’s 10 head coaches.

Thompson is joined on the first team by Loyola College senior guard Gerald Brown, Niagara University senior guard/forward Charron Fisher and sophomore guard Tyrone Lewis, and Siena College junior guard Kenny Hasbrouck and sophomore guard/forward Edwin Ubiles.

Thompson, a member of the 2006-07 All-MAAC First Team, is the MAAC’s top rebounder, pulling down 10.1 boards per game last season, and is the third top returning scorer, recording 20.1 points a night for the Broncs.  During the 2006-07 season, he was one of just three Division I players to average over 20 points and 10 rebounds per game.  Thompson, the 2007 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, compiled 17 double-doubles in his junior campaign.

Brown, a First Team All-MAAC choice last season, led the league in scoring last season, averaging 22.2 points an outing for the Greyhounds, while pulling down 5.0 boards and dishing out 2.7 assists per game.  He also connected on 74.8 percent of his shots from the charity stripe during the 2006-07 season.

Fisher, a 2006-07 First Team All-MAAC selection, finished second on the MAAC scoring chart last season, netting 20.6 points per contest for the Purple Eagles.  He recorded 8.0 caroms an outing, and owned a 76.8 free throw percentage.

Lewis, a member of the 2006-07 All-MAAC Rookie Team, averaged a team-best 12.3 points over 28 games last season for the Purple Eagles.  Additionally, he contributed 4.0 rebounds and 1.71 steals per game during his freshman campaign.

Hasbrouck, a member of the 2006-07 All-MAAC Second Team, ranked in the top 10 in several MAAC categories last season, including sixth in free throw percentage (78.8), seventh in steals (1.56), eighth in points (16.0) and ninth in three-point field goal percentage (36.6).

Ubiles, the 2006-07 MAAC Co-Rookie of the Year, averaged 11.8 points and 4.0 rebounds over 32 games played last season.  He also registered 20 double-digit scoring efforts in his first season for the Saints.
