Baltimore, MD ? Loyola College freshmen Eddie Dines and Phil Bannister each scored first-half goals, as the Greyhounds defeated visiting Liberty University, 2-0, in the NCAA College Cup First Round at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field on Saturday afternoon in front of 902 fans.

Dines put the Greyhounds (19-3) on the board in the 23rd minute, scoring a goal off a ball that bounced between several players in front of the goal.

Julian Cantillo started the action with a corner kick from the left side of the goal. Cantillo’s kick sailed to the far post where a Liberty defender put a head on the ball, deflecting it off the near post.

Off the rebound, Dines put a solid header past Flames goalkeeper Paul Gilbert 22:05 into the match.

Liberty (13-5-2) gained its first good chance of the half minutes later as Joshua Boateng drove a low shot that was saved by Loyola goalkeeper Milos Kocic in the 37th minute.

The Flames were whistled for a foul about 10 yards outside of the box, setting the Greyhounds up for a direct kick.

After a Loyola player tapped the ball, Camilo Correa turned and struck a hard, low shot at Gilbert. The ball bounced off the Liberty goalkeeper’s hands toward the right side of the box.

Bannister picked up the rebound and scored 40:21 into the half.

Loyola outshot the Flames, 9-2, in the first half, but Liberty had almost all of the offensive chances after halftime.

Liberty took 10 shots in the second half, while the Greyhounds did not attempt any. Kocic made all five of his saves after the break.

The Greyhounds advance to the NCAA College Cup Second Round where they will face the No. 13 seed University of Maryland on Wednesday, November 28, at 5 p.m. in College Park, Md.
