MAAC Sports
Emmitsburg, MD Siena College sophomore Matt Girsh (Mahopac, N.Y.) has been selected Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year, while Providence College senior James Courter (Lincoln Park, N.J.) earned Defensive Player of the Year honors to headline the 2007 MAAC Men’s Lacrosse League All-MAAC Teams, as voted by the league’s head coaches.
Additionally, Canisius’ Tim Rowley (West Seneca, N.Y.), Marist’s Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) and Siena’s Brent Herbst (Plainview, N.Y.) all share Rookie of the Year honors, while Siena’s Brian Brecht was selected Anaconda Sports Coach of the Year.
Girsh, a 6-3 attackman, has had an outstanding season for the Saints. He currently sits atop the conference and is second in the nation with a 3.13 goal per game average. His eight goal performance against VMI on March 17 is the top goal output of any player in the nation this season. He also led the league with four game winning goals this season. Girsh also is ranked eighth nationally in points per game, averaging 3.93. He earned four Offensive Player of the Week selections this season.
Friar defenseman, Courter, is the player assigned with the difficult task of slowing down the opponent’s main scoring threat. His efforts on the defensive end have helped Providence earn the conference’s best team goal against average. Courter’s defense helped the Friars allow the least amounts of shots on goal in the conference with just 13.93 attempts per contest.
Canisius’ 5-11 midfielder, Rowley, led the conference in ground balls, averaging 5.55 per game. He also won 103 of his 173 faceoffs, for a 59.5% faceoff percentage. Teichmann started 11 of the 15 games he played for the Red Foxes. His 19 goals are the second most on the team. Teichmann earned one Rookie of the Week selection this season. Siena’s Herbst started 13 games in goal for the Saints this season and led the league with his goals against average of 7.76. He also owned the league’s fourth best save percentage at 55.1%. Herbst was selected Defensive Player of the Week three times this season and earned one Rookie of the Week selection.
Third year head coach, Brecht has led the Saints to their finest season in league history. He has led a program that is ranked in the nation’s top 20 in six statistical categories to six more wins than the 2006 season and has earned the top seed in this week’s championship, which is Siena’s first berth to the MAAC championship. Nationally, the Saints are ranked sixth in face-off win percentage and twelfth in win percentage and scoring margin. They are also ranked 15th in scoring offense and man-down defense. Brecht’s team finished the regular season with a 7-1 record in league play.
First Team All-MAAC selections include Canisius’ Kevin Ross (Toronto, Ont.), Manhattan’s Brian Murray (Hillsdale, N.J.) and Siena’s Girsh at attack. At midfield are Canisius’ Tom Hensel (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), Marist’s Keith Detelj (Sayville, N.Y.) and Mount St. Mary’s Eric Seifert (Dover, Del.). Manhattan’s Corey Dolik (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), Providence’s Courter and Siena’s Chris Viviano (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) all earned spots at Defenseman, while Providence’s Peter Littell (Upper Montclair, N.J.) was selected at goalkeeper.
