Edison, N.J. ? The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s ten member institutions will participate in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) “Think Pink” initiative in February to raise breast cancer awareness on campuses and in communities.
The WBCA announced today that over 600 schools have signed up in 2008, a huge increase over the 120-plus schools that participated in the inaugural “Think Pink” week in 2007. “Since 2001, the MAAC has supported the Young Survival Coalition’s (YSC) efforts to educate the medical research, breast cancer, and legislative communities with the intent of persuading these groups to address breast cancer concerns in women under 40,” said Senior Associate Commissioner, Barbara Church. “The MAAC is excited about participating in the WBCA’s “Think Pink” initiative as it expands the conference’s efforts to further educate the student-athletes and fans about the importance of early detection.”
MAAC schools will be provided with pink shooting shirts for warm-ups, while other involvement will be specific to each institution. In addition, all coaches are asked to wear pink to the specified game. “It’s great to see our whole conference get involved in the fight against cancer,” said Alisa Kresge, the Director of Women’s Basketball Operations for the MAAC. “Each school is taking its own approach to fighting cancer and educating people. Everyone has put a lot of effort into their “Think Pink” game.”
