Buffalo, N.Y. - Canisius College Athletics will be raising money to support the Brian Dux Assist Fund on the evening of Jan. 18. That night, the Golden Griffins play host to a nationally televised college basketball doubleheader against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and Little Three rival Niagara University in the Koessler Athletic Center. The women’s game will tip-off at 4:30 p.m., while the men meet at 7 p.m. Both games can be seen live on ESPNU.
Canisius will pledge $75 for every assist registered by its women and men’s teams and is encouraging fans of both programs to pledge an amount per assist they find appropriate. Pledge cards will be distributed at the door that evening. Fans can also go to GoGriffs.com, beginning Jan. 14, and click on the “Online Store” to make their pledge or specific dollar donation, or call 716-888-2972 to make their pledge over the phone. The Canisius women average just under 12 assists per game, while the Canisius men average slightly over 11 assists per contest.
“Brian is a very important member of the Golden Griffin family and in his time of need we want to do what we can to help,” Canisius College Director of Athletics Bill Maher said. “We encourage other teams and individuals to join us this evening for a special cause for a very special person.”
In addition to the pledges, Canisius will also sell a special Brian Dux T-shirt that evening for only $10. Brian Dux hats, knit caps and bracelets can also be purchased.
Dux, a former Golden Griffin, was seriously injured in a one-car accident in England, Nov. 10, 2007. He is recuperating from his injuries in Buffalo.
Dux played for the Golden Griffins from 1999-03. He ranks 14th in career scoring with 1,239 points, first in career free throw percentage at 82.9 percent, second in assists with 508 and ninth in steals with 140.
