Lipus, Rankovic Named Runners of the Week

Edison, NJ ? Iona’s Daniel Lipus and Manhattan’s Jelena Rankovic were named Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Runners of the Week, respectively, for the final week of the regular season.
Rookie Lipus, a native of Remscheid, Germany, finished first overall in the Gaels dual-meet win over Manhattan at Van Cortlandt Park. Lipus finished the 5.1k race with a time of 15:44. After running neck-and-neck with Jasper junior Milos Vuckovic through the first lap around the course, Lipus pulled away in the back hills and the final straight away for the three-second victory.
Rankovic, a sophomore from Lazarevac, Serbia, was the top finisher in the dual meet at Van Cortlandt Park, as the Lady Jaspers defeated Iona 27-29. Rankovic’s winning time of 10:41 was two seconds faster than the second-place finisher, Kristen Peluso of Iona.
The 2008 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships will be held on November 1st at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
