Lawrenceville, NJ ? The Rider University volleyball team hosted the Marie Katzenback School for the Deaf for a two-hour clinic in Alumni Gym Wednesday afternoon.

“The clinic is just one way we can keep involved with the local community,” said head coach Emily Ahlquist who has hosted Katzenback for the past several years.  “If you can show someone the game of volleyball and teach it to them, you become a much better student-athlete.”

The Rider Athletics community outreach program, under the direction of Karin Torchia, associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator, involves all 20 sports and includes activities such as Adopt a Highway, Toys for Tots, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure as well as collecting food for the needy at Thanksgiving and during the holidays.

“I applaud our volleyball players and coaches for their outreach and continued involvement with the Katzenback School,” said Torchia.  “Opportunities such as the clinic they did today give our student-athletes a chance to positively impact the young kids in our local community by serving as great role models.”

“It is a thrill for the players to interact with younger players,” Ahlquist added.  “We get to see their players grow and mature and become not only better athletes but better people as well.”

In its 125th year, the Marie Katzenback School for the Deaf, located on a 110-acre campus in Ewing, New Jersey, offers both day and residential programs (ages 3-21) that make services accessible to Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students in New Jersey and surrounding states.
