Edison, NJ ? Loyola College swept Swimmer of the Week honors, with Ozzy Torres winning the men’s honor and Tori Kamauff earning the distinction on the women’s side. Rider University’s Paul Apostolakis and Amanda Burke won Diver of the Week honors.
Torres, a sophomore from Bridgeport, Connecticut, won two individual events, and was a part of two victorious relays on Saturday as the Greyhounds earned wins over Georgetown, Lafayette and Seton Hall. He won the 100- and 200-yard butterfly races, clocking times of 50.81 and 1:53.92, respectively. Torres also swam the fly leg of the 400-yard medley relay, a team that swam the third-fastest time in school history, 3:25.72. He closed the meet by leading off the 400-yard freestyle relay, a race won by Loyola in 3:10.25, the fifth-best time in school history.
Kamauff, a senior out of Baltimore, had a strong day in the pool for Loyola, winning three individual events in helping the Greyhounds defeat Georgetown, Lafayette and Seton Hall in a quad-meet. She also was the anchor on Loyola’s winning 400-meter freestyle relay that edged Lafayette’s entry by 0.33 seconds with a time of 3:33.29. Individually, Kamauff won the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.66), 200-yard backstroke (2:10.13) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.97).
Apostolakis, a junior from Brooklyn, New York, won the three-meter (253.95) and one-meter (305.92) events in a dual meet with Marist College, qualifying for the NCAA Zone A Competition. Apostolakis competed in the Zone A Competition as a sophomore as well.
A native of Churchville, Pennsylvania, Burke, a junior, won the one-meter (294.59) and three-meter (289.43) diving events, qualifying once again for the NCAA Zone A Competition. Burke also took home Diver of the Week honors last week.
The 2009 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships will be held February 12-14 at Loyola College in Baltimore, MD.
