Edison, N.J. ? Marist College sophomore Allie Burke and Siena College senior April London were two of seven student-athletes named to the 2008 Academic All-District 1 Volleyball First Team, selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and presented by ESPN The Magazine.
Burke, a business administration major with a 4.00 GPA, started all 30 matches as a freshman and totaled 262 kills for the season, including a career-high 15 against Manhattan on Sept. 15, 2007. In 2007 Burke also totaled 96 blocks for the season. In 2008, she has played in 22 matches for the Red Foxes and has totaled 70 kills, in addition to 39 total blocks. Burke is the first Marist player in program history to be named to the first team, and the second selection from Marist to the All-District Team. Aline dos Santos was named to the second team in 2002. Burke is one of four sophomores at the University Division to make the first team.
London, who will graduate as the most successful setter in Siena history, carries a 3.87 GPA in marketing and management. She has led the Saints to the MAAC Championship and NCAA Tournament in each of her three years with the program. Along the way she has demolished all the school's setting records. London recently surpassed the 5,000 career assist mark (5,041 entering play this weekend) and has compiled nearly 2,000 more assists than the next closest student-athlete in school history. The Saints are 81-44 all-time in London's career and she has served as the setter in all 125 matches.
As members of the first team, Burke and London will be nominated for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Team.
