Manhattan Men and Women Win 2008 MAAC Indoor Track Championship

New York, NY ? Manhattan College claimed its 12th consecutive MAAC men’s indoor track and field championship today with 214 points, while the Lady Jaspers posted a score of 278.50 to earn their 11th title in 12 years.

Manhattan’s Dexter Jules was named the Most Outstanding Male Field Performer. Jules finished second in the long jump (6.78 meters) and the triple jump (14.65 meters). He also sprinted to a first place finish in the 55 meter dash (6.52 seconds).

Iona’s Andrew Ledwith earned Most Outstanding Male Track Performer for his first place finishes in the 3000 and 5000 meter races. Ledwith ran 8:16.16 in the 3000 after beginning the meet with a time of 14:53.36 in the 5000 meters.

Rider’s Kelly Kajunski and Manhattan’s Malin Marmbrandt were named the Co-Most Outstanding Female Field Performers. Kajunski won the high jump with a height of 1.70 meters. She also finished third in the triple jump (10.99 meters) and the long jump (5.17 meters). Marmbrandt won both the long jump (5.74 meters) and the triple jump (11.96 meters).

Manhattan’s Diane Torsell was selected as the Most Outstanding Female Track Performer. Torsell won the 55 meter dash in 7.18 seconds and ran 25.18 to win the 200 meter dash.

Two Lady Jaspers set new MAAC Indoor Track Championship records. Siri Fagerlund set a new record in the women’s 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.17 in the preliminaries. Fagerlund then won the event by posting a time of 8.20 in the finals. The old record of 8.21 set by Manhattan’s Karen Crockett had stood since 1989. Pole vaulter Meredith Mante set a new mark with a height of 3.60 meters, topping the old mark of 3.40 meters set by Manhattan’s Jenna Daly in 2004.

Manhattan College head coach Dan Mecca was named both the men’s and women’s 2008 Indoor Track Coach of the Year.
