Edison, NJ ? The Marist College Red Foxes are the team to beat for the 2008 MAAC Water Polo Championship, as determined by the conference’s six head coaches in their annual preseason poll.
Marist, the 2007 regular season champions, earned 32 points in the poll to lead all teams. The Red Foxes went 10-0 in the MAAC last season, 23-13 overall, before losing to Wagner, 8-7, in the MAAC Championship Game. First year head coach Ashleigh Jacobs will be looking to lead the Red Foxes to the NCAA Championship with four returning 2007 All-MAAC selections in Kristen Barnett, Katelin McCahill, Hilary Schroeder, and goalkeeper Elizabeth Davis.
Iona College junior Amanda Brucia, the 2007 Co-Offensive Player of the Year, was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year. Brucia led the conference last season with 89 goals and an average of 3.18 goals per game. She received Offensive Player of the Week honors four times.
Iona finished just behind Marist in the poll with 31 points. Siena was third with 20 points, followed by St. Francis (NY) with 17. Villanova and defending MAAC Champion Wagner finished with 13 points each.
Brucia was also voted to the Preseason All-MAAC team along with Marist’s Davis, McCahill, and Schroeder, Siena’s Lauren Garrigan, Villanova’s Carla Martinez, Wagner’s Billy Hoelck.
