Weller, Holm-Joergensen Named MAAC Runners of the Week

Edison, NJ – Iona’s Jason Weller and Anna Holm-Joergensen were named the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Runners of the Week, respectively.

Weller, a junior from Barto, Pennsylvania, finished second overall to lead the No. 7 Iona College men's cross country team to a second place finish at the 2009 Paul Short Run gold race on the campus of Lehigh University. Racing less than 30 miles from his hometown, Weller finished behind the race winner by under a second with a time of 23:41 in the hotly contested finish. The third, fourth and fifth place finishers were clocked at less than two seconds behind Weller. The race field contained 42 teams and 386 runners. With 55 team points, the Gaels were 11 shy of Indiana in the event.

Holm-Joergensen, a graduate student from Broenshoej, Denmark, made her Maroon & Gold debut at the 2009 Paul Short Run gold race on the campus of Lehigh University. She finished 36th overall in the 363 runner race-field and led the Gaels to an 11th place overall finish. Joergensen crossed the line in the 6k race in 21:20.  Iona was the top MAAC school in the event, besting Marist and Loyola and No. 2 behind Cornell among Northeast region squads.

The 2009 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships will be held on October 30 at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale, New York.
