BOSTON, MA - Iona College sophomore Ryan Sheridan led the No. 9 Iona College men's cross country team to a second place finish at the 2009 NCAA Regional Championship. Sheridan won the individual title, crossing the 10k line in 30:36, ten seconds ahead of the second place finisher from Providence. With the second place finish the Gaels earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship in Terre Haute, IN on Nov. 23.

Iona was narrowly defeated by No. 11 Syracuse in the team score by just four points.

Sheridan's title followed former teammate Mohamed Khadraoui's 2008 individual championship as the duo became the first pair in school history to win back-to-back NCAA Regional championships.  He joined four other teammates as All-Northeast Regional winners in the event. Sophomore Alexander Soderberg was sixth overall (31:11) and junior Jason Weller finished 11th (31:19) while freshmen Thorsten Baumeister (31:38) and Matt Bayley (31:43) crossed the line back-to-back in 20th and 21st.

Syracuse (55) and Iona (59) joined No. 23 Providence (78) as the only teams to score under 100 in the event.

The No. 9 Gaels earned their eighth straight automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The back-to-back national runner up squad will compete at nationals in nine days in a race that will be televised nationally on Versus on Nov. 23 at 12:58 pm.
