Loudonville, NY- In a show of support and holiday cheer, the Siena athletic department and each of its 17 teams recently sponsored and adopted a local family in need for the holiday season. The project was coordinated through the Franciscan Center for Service in Albany.

"I would like to thank the Siena athletic department for their support of 18 families for the Franciscan Giving Tree," said Judy Dougherty of the Franciscan Center.

A total of 18 families (17 from the teams and one from the athletic department) were sponsored for the holiday season. Administrators, coaches, support staff and student-athletes alike donated, wrapped and delivered holiday gifts to each of their families.

Representatives from the Siena's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) coordinated the event from Siena's end. It marked the fifth year in which the athletic department has participated in this endeavor.

The Franciscan Center for Service and Advocacy calls the Siena College community to look beyond the boundaries of our campus in order to see how we may respond to the demands of justice that arise in our local area, our nation, and throughout the world.

Rooted in the Franciscan tradition of service and informed by the themes of Catholic Social Thought, the Franciscan Center for Service and Advocacy creates formative educational opportunities for students through a process in which classroom learning is integrated with hands on service among the poor and marginalized.
