Edison, NJ ? The Canisius College Golden Griffins were selected as the team to beat in the MAAC Lacrosse League in 2009, according to the league’s nine head coaches.

The Griffs, who received 80 points out of a possible 81, are coming off their most successful season in program history, which culminated in a MAAC Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Leading the way for Canisius will be Preseason Player of the Year Adam Jones. A sophomore midfielder, Jones was an All-MAAC First Team selection in his rookie season and received All-America honorable mention accolades from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. Jones averaged 2.38 goals per game, the most in the MAAC and the highest tally in the country among midfielders.

Providence College, last year’s regular season champions, finished second in the poll with 68 points. Siena College was third with 61 points. VMI was fourth with 47 points, followed by Saint Joseph’s (44), Manhattan (41), Marist (32), Mount St. Mary’s (21) and Wagner (11).

The preseason All-MAAC team consists of Canisius’ Nick LoCoco, Providence’s Colin Tigh, and Siena’s Matt Girsh at attack. The midfielders are Jones, Providence’s Jackson Fallon, and VMI’s Tim Moran. Manhattan’s Steve Sternberg, Saint Joseph’s Tom Wengenosky, and Siena’s Chris Viviano were selected as the defensemen. Siena’s Brent Herbst was chosen as the goalkeeper.
