Manhattan Men and Women Claim 2009 MAAC Indoor Track Championship

New York, NY ? Manhattan College claimed its 13th consecutive MAAC Men’s Indoor Track and Field championship today with 170 points, while the Lady Jaspers posted a score of 222.5 to earn their 12th title in 13 years.

Manhattan’s Kosta Randjic was named the Men’s Most Outstanding Performer for Field Events after winning the men’s triple jump and finishing second in the long jump (7.15m). Manhattan’s Milos Vuckovic and Iona’s Daniel Lipus were named the Co-Most Outstanding Performers for Track Events. Vuckovic finished second in both the 800-meter run (1:52.38) and the mile (4:11.40). He also ran on Manhattan’s 4x400 relay that finished third. Lipus won the 800-meter race with a time of 1:51.41 and ran on Iona’s record setting distance medley relay.

Manhattan’s Malin Marmbrandt was selected as the Women’s Most Outstanding Performer for Field Events. Marmbrandt won the long jump and the triple jump (12.22m). She also finished second in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.56 seconds. Manhattan’s Siri Fagerlund and Iona’s Heidi Gregson were named the Co-Most Outstanding Performers for Track Events. Fagerlund won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.23 seconds and the 55-meter dash in 7.36 seconds. She finished second in the 200-meters with a time of 25.83. Gregson won the 800-meters in 2:14.79 and was on Iona’s distance medley relay that won in a time of 12:17.53.

Two Jaspers set new MAAC Indoor Track Championship records. Kosta Randjic set a new record in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 15.82 meters. The old record was set in 2004 by Manhattan’s Adeniyi Omisore who jumped 15.49 meters. Malin Marmbrandt eclipsed the 19 year-old women’s long jump record with a 5.95 meter jump. Army’s Diana Willis held the previous mark at 5.75 meters.

The Iona men’s distance medley relay also set a meet record, finishing the event in 9:59.89. The team was made up of Chris Vizcaino, Daniel Lipus, Dan Wallace-Periac, and Ryan Sheridan. The old record was set by Iona in 2005 (10:05.74).

Saint Peter’s College head coach Michael Massone was named the 2009 MAAC Indoor Track Men’s Coach of the Year after leading the Peacocks to a second place finish. Manhattan College head coach Dan Mecca was named the 2009 MAAC Indoor Track Women’s Coach of the Year.
