MAAC Teams Earn Six Wins in Seventh Annual ESPNU BracketBusters Weekend

Edison, N.J. ? Six MAAC men’s basketball programs won their matchups during the ESPNU BracketBusters weekend for the second consecutive season.

 

Greg Logins' layup with 1:14 to go in overtime led Canisius College to a 71-66 victory over Bowling Green State University on Saturday at Anderson Arena.  Logins and Julius Coles each followed with two free throws to secure the win for the Golden Griffins (9-18).  Logins had 19 points in the game, while Coles had 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Frank Turner had 16 points for Canisius. Brian Moten scored 14, and Joe Jakubowski added 12 for Bowling Green (15-11).

 

Chris Smith scored 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in Manhattan's 54-39 win over William & Mary on Saturday.  The Jaspers (16-11) shot 57.1 percent from the field (12-for-21) in the second half, helping Manhattan to its fifth win in the last six games.  Trailing 30-28 with 10:37 left in the game, the Jaspers scored 11 unanswered points for a 39-30 lead with 6:45 to play.  Darryl Crawford paced Manhattan with 17 points and Antoine Pearson added 11 points.  The Tribe (9-18) had just one double-digit scorer in Danny Sumner with 11 points and seven rebounds.

 

Dejuan Goodwin scored a career-high 20 points to lead Marist to a 57-35 victory over Hartford on Saturday night.  The Red Foxes (9-20) relied heavily on outside shooting, going 11-for-30 on 3-pointers and 8-for-17 inside the arc.  Goodwin was 6-for-10 from behind the arc, and R.J. Hall was 2-for-4 to finish with 10 points.  Jaret von Rosenberg and Morgan Sabia scored eight points each to lead Hartford (6-23), which made only 11 field goals and shot 23 percent from the field.  Marist used an 11-0 run late in the first half to take a six-point lead and did not trail again.  The 35 points allowed were the lowest the Red Foxes have given up to a Division I team.

 

Niagara powered to a 70-56 victory over Illinois State Friday night live on ESPN2.  Tyrone Lewis scored 19 points while Bilal Benn had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead Niagara (22-7). Rob Garrison added 10 points.  Illinois State (22-6) was led by Champ Oguchi's 19 points, 14 of those coming in the second half. Emmanuel Holloway and Brandon Sampay each added 10 points, while Sampay snared 11 rebounds.

Niagara used a 14-0 run, started with back-to-back three-point field goals by Demetrius Williamson, to open a 20-6 lead at 11:03. Lewis added back-to-back three-pointers to give Niagara a 29-13 lead at 6:27.

 

Ryan Thompson scored 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds as Rider rallied to beat Maryland-Baltimore County, 71-65.  Harris Mansell and Justin Robinson both added 15 points and five rebounds for the Broncs (16-11), who made 47.1 percent of their shots.  Darryl Proctor had 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Retrievers (12-15), while Chauncey Gilliam had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Jay Greene finished with 14 points.  The teams traded baskets for most of the game, but Rider took the lead for good with a 14-6 run - which featured six points by Thompson - that put them ahead 66-61 lead with 2:32 left to play.  The Broncs then sealed the win by making 5-of-6 free throws in the final 40 seconds.  Rider also won the battle of the boards, outrebounding UMBC 41-37.

 

Kenny Hasbrouck led four scorers in double figures with 16 points as Siena handily beat Northern Iowa, 81-75, in the teams' third-ever meeting seen live on ESPN2 Saturday afternoon.  Clarence Jackson added 14 points off the bench including four 3-pointers for the Saints (22-6), who finished the regular season a perfect 14-0 at home.  Jordan Eglesder scored 16 points and added 14 rebounds for the Panthers (18-10), who also got 13 points from Kwadzo Ahelegbe.  Siena led by as many as 21 in the first half after opening the game on a 17-4 sprint. The Saints took a 40-19 lead into the break.
