Nugent, Sumple and Burke Earn First MAAC Baseball Weekly Awards

Bryce Nugent, Marist
Sophomore, C, 6-2/210, Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley
Nugent led Marist in batting average (.700), on-base percentage (.750) and slugging percentage (1.200) as the Red Foxes went 2-1 this past week in a three-game series at Charleston Southern. In the Red Foxes’ 18-7 victory on Feb. 21, he enjoyed a five-hit game, going 5-for-5 with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Nugent’s three-run homer in the fifth inning of that game put Marist ahead for good. He also had a single, double and a walk in Marist’s 7-4 win on Feb. 20.
MAAC Pitcher of the Week
Kyle Sumple, Siena
Sophomore, RHP, 6-0/191, Windsor, Conn./Northwest Catholic
Sumple picked up a four-inning save in Siena’s season-opening upset of Arkansas State. He tossed the final four innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out three to preserve the Saints’ 5-1 win. Sumple did not allow a base runner past second base the opponents hit just .143 against him for the game.
MAAC Rookie of the Week
Chris Burke, Iona
Freshman, RHP/IF, 6-1/195, Islip, N.Y./Islip
Burke led Iona at the William & Mary Round-Robin this weekend, batting .583 with seven hits in 12 at bats. He drove in two runs and scored three appearances. Burke also walked twice and struck out just once in posting a team best .643 on base percentage. He was also the Gaels’ top pitcher, posting a 3.60 ERA in five innings of work. Burke allowed just two earned runs in a no-decision in his only start.
