Buffalo, NY - Canisius College senior Marie Warner has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team. The honor is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) across the country.

Fifteen women’s basketball players at the Division I level are recognized as ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans. Warner is the first student-athlete from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to earn the honor since 1996.

Warner currently has a 3.80 grade point average while pursuing her master’s in business administration. Warner earned her undergraduate degree in marketing.

Warner leads Canisius in scoring (16.5 points) and rebounding (8.5) and free-throw percentage (84.8) while ranking second on the team in 3-point field goal percentage (41.3). The 5-foot-11 forward ranks second in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in scoring, second in rebounding, third in free-throw percentage and second in 3-point field goal percentage.

Warner has nine double-doubles on the season, including eight in the last 14 games. Entering the week, the senior is one of eight players across the country to have 21 points and 21 rebounds in the same game as Warner had 23 points and 21 rebounds against Saint Peter’s Jan. 30. The 21 rebounds by Warner tied the Canisius Division I record.

Warner is the third Golden Griffin in program history to earn Academic All-American honors, with Thais Alexander earning the award in 1996 and Pat Aronson in 1980.

Canisius, standing at 21-7 overall, 13-4 in the MAAC and winners of 20 of its last 24 games, concludes its regular season on Saturday, when the Golden Griffins host Niagara in the Koessler Athletic Center. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m., and the game will be televised live on Time Warner SportsNet.

The game will also serve as a stop on the MAAC’s Radio Disney Tour, with Moises Arias, who plays Rico on “Hannah Montana”, making an appearance at halftime and at a postgame Meet-N-Greet.
