Marist Men, Fairfield Women Picked for Tennis Titles

Edison, NJ ? The Marist College men’s tennis team and the Fairfield University women’s team were chosen as favorites to win the MAAC in 2009, according to a vote by the league’s respective head coaches.

The Marist men, who won last year’s MAAC Championship over Fairfield, topped the poll with 49 points. Returning for the Red Foxes is Loic Sessagesimi, the 2008 MAAC Championship Most Outstanding Performer and a member of the All-MAAC team. Tenth-year head coach Tim Smith also returns All-MAAC selections in Christian Coley, Landon Greene, Nicolas Pisecky, and Marcus von Nordheim .

Fairfield finished second in the poll with 42 points and Niagara was third with 31. Saint Peter’s totaled 29 points to finish fourth, followed by Siena (20), Loyola (14), and Rider (11).

The Fairfield women, last year’s MAAC runners-up, received 58 points in the poll. Head Coach Ed Paige, the 2008 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year, guided the Stags to a 5-2 conference mark a year ago. He returns two All-MAAC selections in juniors Dana Postupack and Paulina Rys.

Niagara was second in the women’s poll with 54 points, followed by Loyola with 48. Siena finished fourth with 42, while Manhattan was fifth with 29. Saint Peter’s tallied 22 points to finish sixth, followed by Marist (20) and Rider (15).

The 2009 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will take place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York from April 17-19.
