Canisius to Play Syracuse in WNIT First Round Wednesday

Buffalo, NY - The Canisius College women’s basketball team will face Syracuse in the first round of the 2009 Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The Golden Griffins and Orange will play on Wednesday, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

Tickets will go on sale at the Carrier Dome box office at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and youths 12 and under.

The winner of the Canisius-Syracuse game will play at Bowling Green on a date to be determined.

Syracuse enters the WNIT with a 16-14 record and was 5-11 in the Big East. The Orange lost 63-61 to St. John’s in the first round of the Big East Tournament.

Canisius and Syracuse will be meeting for the 12th time. The teams last met on Dec. 22, 2006, a 56-43 win for Canisius in the Carrier Dome.

Canisius is making the program's first appearance in the WNIT and second Division I postseason appearance. The Golden Griffins played in the 2005 NCAA Tournament, losing 80-48 to No. 1 Duke in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Canisius is 24-8 on the season, with the 24 wins standing as the most since the program went to the Division I level. Canisius is having its third 20-win season since 1986-87, and second under fifth-year coach Terry Zeh.
