Michalisin and Rys Named MAAC Tennis Weekly Award Winners

Edison, N.J. ? Fairfield freshman Joe Michalisin was named MAAC Men’s Tennis Performer of the Week, while fellow Stag Paulina Rys earned the award on the women’s side.
Michalisin continued to impress at No. 1 singles and doubles going a combined 6-2 this week to help Fairfield to a 3-1 week and to remain undefeated in the MAAC. At No. 1 singles, Michalisin went 4-0 to extend his winning streak to six matches. He started things off with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over John Hughes in Fairfield's 4-3 win against Quinnipiac, before topping Casey Jedlinski of Rider, 6-4, 6-4, in the Stags' 7-0 win. In the 7-0 win at Loyola, he blanked Keyan Sanai, 6-0, 6-0. In Fairfield's tough 4-3 loss to Villanova, he downed Alex Leeser, 6-2, 6-4, and picked up his 20th win of the season. In doubles play, Michalisin went 2-2 at the top spot. Michalisin and partner Chip Palumbo downed Rider's Jedlinski and Esposito, 8-3. He also paired with Rob Ferrante to defeat Loyola's Sanai and Norton, 8-5. Michalisin is 20-5 overall in singles, including an 11-2 mark in duals, and a 3-1 mark in the MAAC. In doubles, Michalisin is 18-10 overall, 7-5 in duals, and 3-1 in the MAAC.
Rys went 4-0 this week capturing two singles and two doubles matches to help Fairfield extend its winning streak to nine matches and remain undefeated in the MAAC with victories over Rider and Loyola. Rys extended her winning streak at No. 2 singles to eight matches with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Rider's Kristina Paich and a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Loyola's Caitlyn Day. In doubles play, Rys and partner, Kristen Liu, improve to 3-1 in the MAAC and 10-3 overall with 8-1 victories at the top spot over both Morse and Paich of Rider and Janasek and Swan of Loyola. On the season, Rys is 16-8 overall, 9-1 in duals, and 4-0 in the MAAC in singles play; in doubles, she is 16-8 overall, 7-1 in duals, and 3-1 in MAAC play.
The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will take place from April 16th through April 19th at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
