POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - After breaking multiple Marist records during the 2008-09 season, junior forward Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) was named Honorable Mention All-American by the Associated Press on Tuesday afternoon. Fitz is the first Marist women's basketball player to be named All-American. She became Marist's all-time leading scorer this season and has 1,844 points in three seasons with the Red Foxes.
Fitz was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's Player of the Year for the second straight season She averaged 20.5 points and 9.3 rebounds this season. Fitz also broke Marist's single-season and career records for points, field goals made, and scoring average this season. She shot 60.5% from the field and 83% from the free throw line. Earlier this season, Fitz was named a midseason candidate for the Wooden Award and was also an ESPN the Magazine First Team Academic All-District selection.
Marist won its sixth-straight MAAC regular-season title in the 2008-09 season, taking its fourth MAAC tournament title as well. The Red Foxes finished the season 29-4 after losing to Virginia 68-61 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
