Marist's Rachele Fitz Tops All-Met Division I Women's Team

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. --- Rachele Fitz of Marist was named 2008-09 All-Met Division I women’s college basketball player of the year Tuesday by the National Invitation Tournament and Met Basketball Writers Association.

Brian Giorgis of Marist won the Maggie Dixon Coach of the Year award for the second straight season and third time overall.

Joining Fitz on the All-Met first team: Epiphanny Prince, Rutgers, last season’s player of the year; Notesiah Womack, Seton Hall; Kia Vaughn, Rutgers; Julianne Viani, Marist; Da’Shena Stevens, St. John’s.

Named to the All-Met second team: Thazina Cook, Iona; Alex Maguire, Army; Judie Lomax, Columbia; Ebonie Williams, Seton Hall; Monique McLean, St. John’s; Baendu Lowenthal, Fairfield.

A junior forward from Seven Hills, Ohio, Fitz led the Red Foxes with 20.5 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 59.8 percent field goal shooting and 82.8 percent from the free throw line. Marist’s all-time leading scorer with 1,844 points after three seasons, she was named MAAC player of the year for a second consecutive season and Honorable Mention All-America.

In his seventh season, Giorgis guided the Red Foxes (29-4) to a record sixth straight Metro Atlantic regular season championship, the MAAC tournament title and a berth in the NCAA tournament. Giorgis previously was named All-Met coach of the year in 2004 and 2008.

All-Met players and coaches will be honored Wednesday evening, April 15, at Giants Stadium Club in East Rutherford, N.J.
