Fairfield Sweeps MAAC Tennis Weekly Awards

Edison, N.J. ? Joe Michalisin of Fairfield University was named MAAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while teammate Paulina Rys was named Player of the Week on the women’s side.
Michalisin, a freshman, helped Fairfield earn the regular season MAAC championship with the Stags’ first win over Marist in 10 years, picking up two wins in the effort. With the doubles competition tied at one match apiece, he and partner Rob Ferrante posted a 9-8(6) win at the top spot to give Fairfield the doubles point. In singles competition, he notched the Stags’ third point of the match with a straight set victory. Michalisin is 24-5 overall in singles play, including a 15-2 dual record and a 5-1 MAAC record. His doubles record is 21-11 overall and 5-1 in MAAC play.
Rys, a junior, concluded the regular season with a 4-1 record for the week. She started the week with a straight set win over Marist’s Emily Zampello to remain undefeated (7-0) in MAAC play. She picked up two more singles wins during the week, highlighted by a comeback win against Sacred Heart. In doubles, Rys went 1-1, picking up a win over a Marist pair before falling to a duo from Sacred Heart. Rys has a 22-8 singles record overall, which includes a 15-1 mark in duals, and has a 20-9 overall doubles record, which includes an 11-2 record in duals and a 6-1 MAAC record.
The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will take place from April 16th through April 19th at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
