Field Is Set For 2009 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championships

Edison, NJ - The 2009 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship begins this Friday, April 24 with a pair of games at Mazzella Field on the campus of Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. The winner will host a play-in game against the champion of the Northeast Conference (NEC) next weekend.

At 12:00 p.m., top-seeded Fairfield University, the 2009 Regular Season Champions, will host fourth-seeded Manhattan College. The second semifinal, slated to begin 45 minutes after the completion of the first game, will feature second-seeded Canisius College and defending champions and third-seeded Marist College. The championship game will be played on Sunday, April 26 at 12:00 p.m. All three contests can be seen live on www.maacsports.com

Fairfield enters the championship as the top seed for the second straight year. The Stags went a perfect 6-0 in conference play and were 14-2 overall. 2008 Co-Offensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year Kristen Coleman leads the way for Fairfield, who fell 10-9 in the championship game a year ago. Manhattan qualified for the MAAC Championship for the first time since 2006 after going 4-2 in the league and 11-4 overall. Fairfield defeated Manhattan 22-6 when the teams met on March 29th. 

Canisius arrives in New Rochelle with a 4-2 league mark and an overall record of 8-9. The Golden Griffins two conference losses came in the last weekend of the season at top seed Fairfield and semifinal opponent Marist. Marist also heads into the conference championship with a 4-2 MAAC record (11-4 overall). The Red Foxes knocked Canisius out of last year's championship with a 15-10 semifinal victory.

Tickets for the 2009 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship can be purchased at the gate. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children and students.
