Loyola Men and Siena Women Win 2009 MAAC Golf Championships

Celebration, Fla. ? The Loyola College men's golf team won their tenth league title, while the Siena College women's team captured its ninth conference crown in the 2009 MAAC Men's and Women's Golf Championships at the Celebration Golf Club in Celebration, Florida.
Loyola shot a final-round of 304 to finish with a three-day total of 907. Siena College finished in second place with a final score of 912 , while Iona College took third place (918). Fairfield University (929) placed fourth, followed by Canisius College (937), Rider University (941), Niagara University (943), Manhattan College (945) and St. Peter’s College (978).
Michael Mulieri of Loyola and Drew Creighton of Canisius, who both finished the day with a score of 223, competed in a sudden-death playoff for first place. Michael Mulieri won the playoff on the first hole to win the McLeod Award, presented to the MAAC individual champion. The award is named after Charles "Scott" McLeod, a 1980 graduate of Iona College, who passed away in 1985 after a life-long fight with kidney-related ailments. McLeod was also a lifetime member of the Pelham Country Club, where the MAAC Tournament was held in the middle 1980's, and was a sponsor of the tournament the first year it was held at Pelham.
Dan Abbondandolo (224) of Siena and Ryan McCarthy (225) of Loyola finished third and fourth respectively.
Loyola freshman Jay Mulieri was named 2009 Men’s Golf Rookie of the Year. Loyola head coach Tom Beidleman was named the 2009 MAAC Coach of the Year.
The Siena women's team claimed its ninth MAAC Women's Championship with a final score of 1010. Fairfield placed second with a score of 1013. Katelynn Mannix of Siena won the McLeod Award with a three-day total of 232. Rounding out the top three, Catherine Shomo finished second (245) while Christina Destefano (246) finished third.
Siena freshman Julie Juchno was named 2009 Women’s Golf Rookie of the Year.
