FAIRFIELD, Conn. ? The Fairfield University women’s tennis team learned the destination of its 2009 NCAA Tournament appearance this afternoon. The Stags will head to the West Coast to face seven-seed and site host University of Southern California during the first round on May 9 at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles.
“It’s amazing to be considered in the elite company of the top-64 teams in the nation,” third-year head coach Ed Paige said. “We will wear the colors of Fairfield proudly and look forward to an awesome experience in Los Angeles.”
The Trojans (20-2) captured the Pac-10 Team Championship and are led by senior Amanda Fink who won the Pac-10 Singles Championship and a Pac-10 Doubles Championship on April 26. The University of Washington and San Diego State will also be at the four-team site.
Fairfield (16-4; 6-1 MAAC) captured the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship on April 19 to earn its second-ever automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The last NCAA appearance came in 2004 when the Stags travelled to Seattle, Wash. to face the University of Washington. The Stags have won eight MAAC Championships in program history.
