Edison, N.J. ? Fairfield University, which captured four Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship titles during the 2008-09 academic year, has earned the league’s highest honor, earning the MAAC Commissioner's Cup.

The MAAC Commissioner’s Cup is awarded annually as a symbol of overall excellence in athletics in the 24 championship athletic events conducted within the MAAC.  Each institution is scored in all championships that it fields a varsity team.  However, only the scores from the men’s and women’s basketball participation, plus the other top six men’s and other top six women’s championships shall be used to determine an institution’s total points.

“It is great to see Fairfield University capture the Commissioner's Cup after such a competitive year of athletics for the program,” MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor noted.  “As a founding member of the MAAC, Fairfield has long set the standard of excellence for the league both on the fields of play and in the classroom.  Director of Athletics Gene Doris, his administrators, coaches and student-athletes are to be commended for their success.”

Fairfield previously won the MAAC Commissioner’s cup twice before this season (1997-98 and 1994-95), while the Stags won their first women’s cup since the 2001-02 season.  The Stags won one men’s and three women’s championships this past season.  In the fall, Fairfield earned the title crown in both men’s and women’s soccer.  In the spring, Fairfield claimed the women’s tennis and women’s lacrosse championships.

“We are very proud of the achievement by our student athletes, especially in regard to the numerous MAAC championships and NCAA tournament bids,” Fairfield Director of Athletics Gene Doris said.  “Winning the commissioner's cup further shows the continuation of our overall development as an athletic program.”

Loyola College was awarded the men’s cup for the second consecutive year.  The Greyhounds earned the regular-season title in men’s soccer, while claiming league titles in men’s swimming and men’s golf.

“Winning the Commissioner's Cup for the second year in a row is a tremendous accomplishment by our student-athletes and our coaches,” Loyola Director of Athletics Joe Boylan said.  “They both work extremely hard, and the results speak for themselves.  Each represents Loyola College in a positive way, both athletically and academically.  I want to thank the coaches who have provided excellent leadership and are a major part of this success.”

Fairfield finished the overall race with a total of 128.50 points, 18 points ahead of runner-up Marist College.  On the men’s side, Loyola captured the league crown with 53.50 points, just one point more than second-place Siena College.  The Stags finished in the top spot in the women’s cup race by compiling 79 points, 18 points ahead of Marist.

The rest of the field finished as follows: Marist (110.50), Loyola (102), Siena (98), Manhattan College (95.5), Iona College (87.5), Canisius College (87), Niagara University and Rider University (79.50), and Saint Peter’s College (55.50).
