Fairfield, CT - The Fairfield University women’s lacrosse team will take on fourth-seeded University of Pennsylvania in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Stags, making their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, are 17-2 on the year and have won 11 consecutive games. Penn is 13-2 on the year, champions of the Ivy League.
The first round of the NCAA Tournament will be played on Sunday, May 10 at Franklin Field. Game time is still to be determined.
Fairfield captured the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League regular season title for the second straight season with an undefeated 6-0 mark. The Stags then knocked off Manhattan and Marist to capture the tournament crown and defeated Sacred Heart 16-10 on Saturday in an NCAA Play-In game to earn its berth.
The Stags are only the second team from the MAAC Lacrosse League to advance to the NCAA Tournament. LeMoyne went three times, 2002, 2003, and 2006, and are 0-3 in those contests.
The winner of the game between Fairfield and Penn will advance to play the winner of #3 Duke and Virginia. Northwestern is the top-seed in the tournament and will host UMass, while Georgetown will take on Princeton. North Carolina will host Towson, while Vanderbilt visits Notre Dame. Syracuse is hosting Boston University and Maryland will host Colgate to complete the opening round match-ups.
