Field Set for 2009 MAAC Softball Championship

Edison, N.J. ? With the completion of conference play, the field is now set for the 2009 MAAC Softball Championships, beginning Thursday, May 7 at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. The championship can be seen in its entirety on maacsports.com.
 
In the first contest, the second-seeded Manhattan College Jaspers will take on the number three seed Canisius College Golden Griffins at 1:00 p.m.  Following that game, the top-seeded Fairfield University Stags will take on the Niagara University Purple Eagles at 3:00 p.m. 

Fairfield and Manhattan finished the regular season tied atop the MAAC standings at 11-5.  Canisius and Niagara both finished the season at 9-7 in league play, with Niagara earning its spot in the championship by way of a split at Rider University on Wednesday. The doubleheader originally scheduled for Sunday was postponed due to inclement weather.
 
On Friday, May 8, play resumes at 11:00 a.m., with the winners of Thursday’s contests squaring off.  First pitch of Game 4 is at 1:00 p.m., which will be the first elimination game of the MAAC tournament.  At 3:00 p.m., the field will be whittled down to two teams with yet another elimination contest.
 
The championship game will take place on Saturday, May 9, at 12:00 p.m.  If necessary, a second game will follow at 2:00 p.m.

The winner of the 2009 MAAC Softball Championship earns the league’s automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Division I Softball Championship.
