Buffalo, N.Y. – Canisius College golfer Drew Creighton was recently named to the Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar list for the 2008-09 academic year. Creighton was the only golfer from a school in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to receive the honor.
A rising senior and three-year letterwinner for the Golden Griffins, Creighton became the first player in program history to compete in a playoff at the MAAC Championship this past April. He shot a final-round 76 to finish with a championship tournament total of 223, tying with Michael Mulieri of Loyola for first place. Mulieri won the first playoff hole to claim the individual championship. The second-place finish by Creighton matches the best finish in program history as Glen Gast finished second at the 1995 MAAC Championship.
A two-time MAAC All-Academic honoree, Creighton holds a 3.79 grade point average as a biology major at the College. He is currently taking part in the 87th NYSGA Men's Amateur Championship and will also take play in the 51st Annual Porter Cup Championship July 21-25, at Niagara Falls Country Club.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status, which is presented by the Golf Coaches Association of America, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his teams competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships and have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
