Loyola Selected as Favorite in MAAC Men's Soccer Preseason Poll

Edison, N.J. – Loyola College, the 2008 MAAC Regular Season Champion, has been selected to win the 2009 MAAC men’s soccer title in a preseason poll voted on by the league’s 10 head coaches.
The Greyhounds earned the top spot with 99 points in the poll, while Fairfield University, the defending MAAC champion, finished second (86). Saint Peter’s College was picked third with 69 points, and Niagara University was fourth with 63 points. Iona College placed fifth (60), followed by Siena College (56), Canisius College (42), Marist College (30), Manhattan College (25) and Rider University (20).
Loyola senior forward Jamie Darvill has been named the 2009 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year. Darvill, the 2008 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, led the MAAC in scoring last season with 14 goals and 11 assists for 39 points for the Greyhounds.
Joining Darvill at forward is teammate Phil Bannister and Alan McGreal from Canisius. In the midfield are Christian and Matthew Uy from Fairfield, and Levi Tesch from Niagara. The backs are anchored by Roberto Hernandez-Raaen from Iona, Tennant McVea from Loyola, Anthony DiBiase from Niagara and Assaf Sheleg from Saint Peter’s. Nils Binstock from Iona rounds out the team at the goalkeeper position.
