MAAC Sports
Edison, NJ – Brennan Morris of Loyola University was named the MAAC Men’s Swimmer of the Week, while fellow Greyhound Courtney Trivino won the women’s award. Marist College’s Brian Bolstad was selected as the Men’s Diver of the Week, while Siena College’s Elizabeth Rice earned Women’s Diver of the Week honors.
Morris, a freshman from Lutherville, Maryland, set three Coppola Pool records at Rider on Saturday and shattered a Loyola school record, leading the Greyhounds to a MAAC victory over the Broncs. Morris knocked nearly 10 seconds off the previous school best in the 1,000-yard freestyle on Saturday, winning the event in 9:24.99. He set the record while swimming out front on his own, as the second-place finisher was over 37 seconds behind. Morris then won two more individual events, the 200-yard backstroke (1:50.65) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:54.66). His times in the 1,000 freestyle and the 200 backstroke – as well as his 500-yard cut time during the 1,000 freestyle – were Coppola Pool records. He also helped the 400-yard freestyle relay team to a victory.
Trivino, a sophomore from Caldwell, New Jersey, won five events during the week in a pair of MAAC meets, taking first place in three races on Wednesday versus Siena and two on Saturday at Rider. Trivino was the big point-scorer for the Greyhounds against Siena, and every one counted. Loyola edged the Saints by a single point. Trivino won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.45 and then took the top spot in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:28.97). She concluded her afternoon with a victory in the 400-yard individual medley. On Saturday at Rider, Trivino touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.67) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.24).
Bolstad, a junior from Highland, New York, set two school records in diving events in a dual meet road victory over Southern Connecticut State on Saturday. He scored 374.70 in the 3-meter event, eclipsing his own best score of 371.25. In 1-meter diving he totaled 319.50 points, which trumped Mitchell Katz’s record of 314.03. In addition to the record-setting victories at Southern Connecticut, he also swept the diving events at Lehigh one week earlier. Bolstad remains perfect in 3-meter diving this season with an individual record of 8-0.
Rice, a sophomore from Gansevoort, New York, had a sensational week, sweeping the diving events in meets against Loyola and Canisius, Bryant and NJIT. On Wednesday against the Greyhounds, Rice scored a 235.35 in 1-meter dives and a 202.95 off the high board to win both events. Then in a quad-meet sweep Sunday over Canisius, Bryant and NJIT, Rice again won both events, scoring a 236.50 on the 1-meter board and a 237.40 in 3-meter dives.
The 2010 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships will be held February 11-13 at Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland.
