Poughkeepsie, NY - On Friday October 29, five Women's Crew athletes went to Hagan
Elementary School in Poughkeepsie. They played kickball with 4th and 5th grade students. One of
the rowers played the bully, another rower played the one being bullied. The goal was for the kids to pick up on the
behavior and discuss their reactions.
Afterwards, they all went into the gym and the athletes spoke to them
about bullying, asked if they'd ever been bullied and had them raise their hands. They asked
them how they felt, and for techniques on how to deal with bullies. They divided up into groups and wrote down
examples of what bullies do, and then ways to stop bullies.
The crew athletes also talked about being a student-athlete, and let
them ask questions.
