Edison, NJ - Twenty MAAC student-athletes met in Jersey City, N.J., this past weekend, November 6-7, 2010 for the league's semi-annual Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) event.

The two-day event, hosted by Saint Peter's College, is intended to give student-athletes an opportunity to generate a voice within the conference, to solicit student-athlete responses to proposed NCAA legislation, and to discuss issues relating to the welfare of student-athletes.

All the students arrived Saturday afternoon and enjoyed dinner at Carmine's Italian Restaurant in New York City before heading to see the Broadway hit, Green Day's American Idiot.

Sunday morning began at 7 a.m. with the student-athletes partaking in a community service initiative at Grace Church Van Vorst in Jersey City. The students-athletes assisted in providing breakfast for the hungry within the community. Students were able to engage in conversation with those present at the breakfast, which was at approximately 100 guests.

The community service event was the result of the student-athletes desire to take on a meaningful community service activity, and was planned to coincide with the semi-annual SAAC meeting that takes place each fall and spring at MAAC member institutions. The community service idea was first implemented last spring in conjunction with the MAAC Pepsi Refresh Goodworks Challenge where MAAC member institutions compete against each other to earn the most overall Goodworks Points. Points are awarded for organization and participation in community outreach events within each college's community.

The event concluded on Sunday afternoon with a meeting at Saint Peter's College. Students first participated in a team building activity centered on leadership and then proceeded to discuss NCAA proposed legislation, community service ideas, MAAC SAAC initiatives and ideas as well as sharing ideas for the SAAC programs on their individual campuses.
