MAAC Student-Athletes to Meet at Saint Peter's for Fall SAAC Event
MAAC Sports
Edison, NJ - Twenty MAAC student-athletes will meet in Jersey City, N.J., November 6-7, 2010 for the league’s semi-annual Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) event.
The two-day event, which is hosted by Saint Peter’s College, is intended to give student-athletes an opportunity to generate a voice within the conference, to solicit student-athlete responses to proposed NCAA legislation, and to discuss issues relating to the welfare of student-athletes.
The students will arrive Saturday afternoon and enjoy dinner at Carmine’s Italian Restaurant in New York City before heading to see the Broadway hit, Green Day’s
American Idiot.
On Sunday morning the student-athletes will rise bright and early to partake in a community service initiative at Grace Church Van Vorst in Jersey City. The students-athletes will assist in providing breakfast for the hungry within the community by helping in the kitchen. Students will also engage in conversation with those present at the breakfast, which averages 100 guests each Sunday.
The community service event was the result of the student-athletes desire to take on a meaningful community service activity, and was planned to coincide with the semi-annual SAAC meeting that takes place each fall and spring at MAAC member institutions. The community service idea was first implemented last spring in conjunction with the MAAC Pepsi Refresh Goodworks Challenge where MAAC member institutions compete against each other to earn the most overall Goodworks Points. Points are awarded for organization and participation in community outreach events within each college’s community.
The event will conclude on Sunday afternoon with a meeting at Saint Peter’s College. Topics to be discussed include community service ideas, institutions SAAC position on NCAA proposed legislation, MAAC SAAC initiatives and ideas, MAAC SAAC website, SAAC programs on individual campuses and the Pepsi Goodworks Challenge.
All ten of the MAAC’s member institutions will be represented at the meeting, with Siena’s Katie Carew, a swimmer, serving as chair. Other student-athletes attending include Lauryn Chris and Stephen Seeler of Canisius College, Ben Heslin and Nikki Livesey of Fairfield University, Douglas Hoppe and Jordan Lesansky of Iona College, Ashley Moulton and Alyssa Sutherland of Loyola University Maryland, Deena Sena and Chris Tucci of Manhattan College, Megan Mahoney and Jonathan Schwind of Marist College, Ali Grab and Ryan McCauley of Niagara University, Samantha Bennett and Kelsey Krisch of Rider University, Peter Jimenez and Sean Fitzpatrick of Saint Peter’s College, and Devan Ragg of Siena College.
