Fairfield, CT - Each semester the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) coordinates one
event in which all teams participate. The 2010 fall semester was dedicated to
donating books to the nearby Bridgeport Volunteer School Association. The SAAC
is made up two student-athletes from each team, and this semester they
challenged every student-athlete to bring in a book to donate. "We have had a
great turnout as we were able to fill several boxes and bags to bring to the
school. The important aspect about this project is that we get everyone actively
involved," said Alison Sexton, Senior Associate Athletics Director. "Instead of
just donating money and having a couple of volunteers per team go out and buy
things, this project allows each student-athlete to take it upon themselves to
bring in a book to donate." The SAAC delivered the books to Cesar A. Batalla
School's library and media center December 15. The middle school, located in
Bridgeport, Connecticut currently educates more than 1,000 kindergarten through
eighth grade students Hardcover books donated will be added to the school's
library while paperback books will be given to the students to take home and
enjoy.
