Edison, NJ – The Fairfield University Stags have been selected as the preseason favorites to claim the 2010 MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship, as determined by a vote of the conference’s seven head coaches.

Fairfield, the defending MAAC champions, received 48 points in the poll. The Stags finished last season with a record of 6-0 in the conference and an overall mark of 17-3. Fairfield went on to defeat Marist for the MAAC Championship and then advanced to its first-ever NCAA Tournament with a victory over Sacred Heart in an NCAA Play-In Game.

The Stags will be led by 2010 Preseason Player of the Year Kristen Coleman. Coleman, a junior midfielder, is a two-time MAAC Offensive Player of the Year. She has also been selected to the IWLCA All-Northeast Region Second Team in her first two seasons. In 2009, Coleman was first in the conference and eighth in the nation with 88 total points.

Canisius College was second in the poll with 39 points, followed by Marist College with 34. Manhattan received 28 points, followed by Iona (21), Siena (16), and Niagara (10).

The Preseason All-MAAC team consists of Fairfield’s Erin Rigby and Manhattan’s Carolyn Hickey at attack, while the midfield includes Coleman, fellow Stag Brittany Bare, Canisius’ Brett Poissant, Manhattan’s Chrissy Gutenberger and Keri Morrison, and Marist’s Lauren Ciccarello. Canisius’ Alison Rusak and Fairfield’s Kelly Barnes and Amy Kelleher make up the defense. Canisius’ Allison Daley was chosen as the goalkeeper.
