Van Eck, Rys Named MAAC Tennis Players of the Week

Edison, NJ - Marist’s Joris Van Eck and Fairfield’s Paulina Rys have been named the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week, respectively.

Van Eck, a freshman from Ospel, Netherlands, has won his last three singles matches including two last weekend at third singles against opponents from Cornell and Binghamton. He started the streak at the Army Invite when he defeated Johnny Lucero 6-2, 6-4. His second straight set victory came against Bastian Bornkessel as he surrendered just three games in the match. Van Eck won 6-2, 6-1. On Saturday he went the distance to win at third singles against Jeremy Feldman of Cornell, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1. In doubles action, Van Eck has won three of his last four matches since joining the team in January. He has teamed with Nicolas Pisecky as they pair defeated Mirza Klis and Jonathan Jaklitsch 8-6. The streak started at the Army Invite as the pair defeated teams from Monmouth and Binghamton.

Rys, a senior from Forest Hills, New York, has split both of her singles and doubles matches to start the 2010 campaign. In the Stags 7-0 victory in the season opener against Fordham, Rys  topped Martina Featherston, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 singles. She also notched an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles. Against Stony Brook, Rys battled it out with Prerana Appineni at the second spot, but was edged 6-3, 6-2. At No. 1 doubles, Rys and partner Kristen Liu were down 7-3 but making a comeback when play was stopped due to time. Rys is 7-5 overall in singles play this season.

The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will take place from April 23rd through April 25th at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
